In 1704 in the cityhall of Doetinchem, a certain Cornelis Berkhoff sets foot on the treshold of history, al-
It was Harskamp where the nine children of Willem Tijsen (* circa 1695) and Geertje Woutersen were born. Remarkable is that only the (four) chil-
dren from the third marriage of Willem Tijsens eldest son, were christened with surname Berkhof.  Although their birthplace Kootwijkerbroek is only
a few kilometres from Lunteren, no connection with the Lunteren branch is found. Descendants (Berkhof) are especially found in Houten, Maartens-
dijk,Utrecht and Barneveld. This family branch is also known as Kootwijk.

Born himself in Melle (near Osnabrück, Germany) Casper Berkhof the founder of this ancestry, moved around 1650 to The Dutch Zuiderzee city of
Kampen. In the oldest documents all kinds of name variants like Barkhof, Berghof en Berkholt were found. But around 1700 only the name Berkhof
remained. Descendants have especially been found in Kampen, Hasselt, Emmen and Grand Rapids (USA).

Dutch Families

It was in 1642 that Dirk Berkhoff bought the Citzenship of Den Haag. As residence of the Staten-Generaal
and the Raad van State, Den Haag was the administrative centre of Dutch Republic, a confederation of sou-
vereign provinces bound together by the Union of Utrecht. As master-tailor from Dortmund (Germany) Dirk
probably made clothes for the city high-society and possibly forsome of the provincial representatives. This
Den Haag genealogy must be seen as a raw draft. In search for his Vriezenveen-ancestors Erik visited a lot
of Dutch archives. Although only interested in his own roots, he wrote everything down he found. These no-
tes now form the basis of this branch. New research in archives is necessary to verify and complete it. Des-
cendants have especially been found in Den Haag and Utrecht. Living male descendants are unknown.

though it is known that his father was named Jan and that he was most probably born in Doetinchem (also). Connections with the Berkhoff´s upstream
in Germany are unknown. Descendants are especially found in: Terborg - Varsseveld - Nijmegen and Maastricht - Rotterdam-Bergen op Zoom. This
family branch is also known as Varsseveld.
