Dutch Families

Around 1715 in Veenedaal surfaces the German Gosen Berkhof from Duisburg. The
use of first names as Carel and Cornelis reminds us of the familie ancestry Doetinchem
(or Varsseveld). Descendants (Berkhof) have been found in Veenendaal and Amster-
dam. Living descendants are not known.

Although his father used the surname Barkhof, Jan (* Zijen (?) 1763 -  +1846) and his des-cendants were known under the name Berkhof. In the
eighteenth century, the surnames Berkhof and Barkhof were used on the sandy soils of the north-east of The Netherlands as synonymous. Possibly
this was of influence during the introduction of the Registration Service in 1811, when the spelling of surnames became fixed. Descendants are espe-
cially found Zijen-Vries (Berkhof and Barkhof), Zweelo-Emmen (Berkhof), Anloo-Assen-Norg (Barkhof).

In Weesp, a small city near Amsterdam, Stoffel Barents Berkhoff married in 1698 Catharina Willems Poppe. According the marriage-certificate he
came from the so- called Münsterland. So far no family-relationship with the German Berkhoff´s in Amsterdam is found. Stoffel never obtained a
Citizenship of Weesp. Descendants (Berkhoff) have especially been found in Paramaribo (Suriname), Epe-Apeldoorn and Amsterdam-Den Haag.

The oldest find concerning the founder of the Vriezenveen-branch, Johan Berkhoff is
from 1583. It concerns an entry in the Butterlease Register. It is likelely Johan was
born in Germany, but further research must find out. Descendants (Berkhof and
